It works from the first launch. If you come from Gmail we respect the categories you already have, with the same criteria.
Promotions, social and automated notifications should not compete with a client’s email. They group themselves into collapsed packs you open when it suits you.
Your inbox splits into two planes. In the first one, Primary: people writing to you. In the second, collapsed packs — Promotions, Social, Updates — each with its own counter of new messages. Nothing is deleted or hidden: it is all still there, it just stops interrupting. Open a pack and you enter its list; one button takes you back to Primary.

Each pack tells you how many new messages it holds. You know what is inside without a notification for every one of them.
Open the pack, look, come back. And if something deserves to be in Primary, move it and there it stays.
Move it to Primary and that sender stays there from then on.
